Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]
Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

South African flags[edit]
Hi, I have a few questions about your changes. Firstly, I would just like to ask what source you are using, as my versions were based on measurements from SAVA. Secondly, when comparing differences between your most recent version and the previous, on some of them you have changed the size of the 3 little flags but on others you have not. That seems inconsistent. Might I ask why that is? The last thing is just a comment. I think it would be advisable that all the blue sections on the former South African flag use the same shade of blue, instead of applying the colours from File:Flag of the United Kingdom.svg just to the little Union Jack alone. Fry1989 eh? 17:27, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
- OK。Firstly, I've seen the consreuction sheets by SAVA and I try to apply the accurate proportions to the 3 little flags. Secondly, I have discovered some photos on the Internet and the Commons, which I believe that they give me some notices, so I decided not to emphasize the borders even if in small scales. Thirdly, althrough I made improve to the old South African flag, I got the previous version as flag template to improve some other flags that has old South African flag in the canton. Additionaly, I admit that I made wrongly understand that the old South African flag can applying colors from this chart or SAVA, sorry. --Great Brightstar (talk) 18:24, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
Looking at the Union Jack of the United Kingdom on your South Africa flag, it is 'upside down' (see Flying the Union Jack). Although I only found one quick example of a flag from the time, it showed the Union Jack to be positioned the correct way. I was just wondering if the inversion was a design choice or if there are examples from the time that showed it this way? Justinorbit (talk) 11:38, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
- I've made some improvements on File:Flag of South Africa (1928–1994).svg sometimes as I saw its construction sheets are already documented, (See [1] [2]) also I try my best to make use of SVG technology to reproduce. You can also see the examples on Category:Flag of South Africa (1928–1994); photos althrough there are some mis-spread versions appeared. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 11:59, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Coat of Arms of the Cape Province.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Coat of Arms of the Cape Province.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Flag of the Gilbert Islands Colony from 1976 to 1979[edit]
Hi. During a short period of time this British Colony changed his flag slightly from the previous Gilbert and Ellice Islands (1937-1976). There was a white circle around the badge. I am not able to create this flag. Could you create it or ask for creation?--Arorae (talk) 20:49, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Palestine Customs Flag[edit]
Hi, regarding File:Palestine Mandate Customs and Postal Services Ensign 1929–1948.svg, the text inside the circle was initially "Palestine Customs" (Palestine Gazette, 15 Mar 1929, p208), and reduced to just "Palestine" in the following year (Palestine Gazette, 1 Oct 1930, p789). There was also another flag. Here is the full relevant section of the 1930 regulations:
- The flag to be flown on Customs-House and Vessels in the service of the Customs shall be the Blue Ensign defaced by the word "Palestine" within a white circular field. Vessels in the service of the Customs shall fly, in addition to the defaced Blue Ensign at the stern, a jack at the bow consisting of a square blue flag with a Union in the upper canton next to the staff, defaced in the fly by the word "Customs".

Please do not paste my images into another user's files. They uploaded these files before me and they should remain as they are. I have uploaded my own alternatives based on my own research, which I believe to be best rendition. - The flag size is 1:1 (not 2:3) or the square, the words from up to down (not left to right). Coat_of_arms_of_Annam... versions[edit]
Hi
You edited the texts on four files, this and three more and made the text so much more beautiful.
As I wrote in the email to you there was a problem with the code not being W3C valid any more. What I have done now is I added your great text work to my original files and uploaded them so the code would be W3C valid and similar for the different versions. I have in the information pages of the images added you as creator of the text work and also in reason for uploading the new versions.
I hope this is fine with you, if you want to change/discuss anything just ping me, thanks. --always ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:23, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

A Request for the Flag of Malta[edit]
Hello, I have a request for the Maltese flag. The George cross on the current flag has different and fewer details compare to the one on the official specifications and if you take a look at the George Cross itself you will see what I mean. I search the web for a better and more detailed version but I couldn't find any SVG file, but I found this PNG, which is way better than the current one. So if you have time, can you make a better illustration of the cross? and also in the official specifications, the cross is not grey(only three colors are given). See also this. If you can do it I would be grateful. Best regards. Kamran.nef (talk) 20:29, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

National Revolutionary Army flag[edit]
Hi, could you add (perhaps as an alternate version / file) a white band with Chinese text (spelling "National Revolutionary Army") on the NRA-flag [5] in the same font and style as the Chinese Red Army-flag [6]. I myself know how to add the text, but I dont know how to get the font... (I saw that you had changed the font of the text on the Red Army flag). Here are some examples of the text on the flag IRL [7][8][9].

We need your feedback![edit]
Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!
I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.
We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.
Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.
Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
About the [edit]
- I am sorry if you don't understand my English. However, you foreigners know wrong about the national flag of Empire of Vietnam. I have consulted Hanoian scholars and some witnesses. You designed the ratio of stripes which were wrong. In reality, Empire of Vietnam's designers imitated the "national flag" of Vietnam National Restoration League by political targets. You foreigners "understanded" this flag with the South Vietnam's flag, though it was designed in 1948 - after Empire of Vietnam 3 years. You can reference the movie August's star 01:15:05 (Sao tháng Tám / this equipe ever lived in truly 1945 and they were exacter than ours knowledge). And this : The flag behind the flag of Struggle Party. Thank you ! Cảm ơn ! (27.67.141.255 16:08, 17 August 2021 (UTC))
- So you mean the trigram Ly/Lí (☲) having spacing for all sides, all right? Let me investigate first. --Great Brightstar (talk) 06:49, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
- You're pretty exactly, any false in the ratio, however it's not important. In reality, this ratio was used as some flags of Vietnamese nationalist movement. This flag was designed hurrily, so it's not nice :D. However, we have to respect the history. So Thank You ! (2405:4802:358:2170:954B:1FEA:F63B:FBB 07:57, 19 August 2021 (UTC))
- This form (#FFFF00, #EF4135) which I have supplied to TTXVA channel since 2013. The image was shotted by me in Hanoian historic museum. It corresponding to some flags of Vietnamese revolutionary national movements about 1930-40 and it was like the source of South Vietnam's national flag. Three or four red stripes symbolized Vietnamese national spirit and opposited Communist's hammer&sickle. Besides, html code of the red is #EF4135, it is very different Vietnamese communist flag (#DA251D). I uploaded it to wikipedia from 2018, howeved user "Donald Trung" deleted and he said "destructive". But now he steals our information in TTXVA and used for the smearing Vietnamese nations. If he was Vietnamese citizen, so he will come in prison about 3-8 years certainly. I'm sorry, but you can't truth "Donald Trung". He was born in Netherlands and he couldn't speak Vietnamese language and so he doesn't know our fatherland's history. I can forgive him for his imbecility, but you had better to refer our Vietnamese persons. You can't copy one person who doesn't understand Vietnam and never live in Vietnam as us. Thank you very much ! (27.68.139.221 09:26, 23 August 2021 (UTC))

@Havsjö: , I never said that the purported flag was false, I just said to carefully examine any claims made by Musée Annam because he is notorious for spreading poorly sourced flags. I have no idea where the "wide stripes" came from and I agreed with the Great Brightstar's changes to the file, I simply asked for evidence as I saw that he replaced the flag and then just said "there is evidence" but this wasn't listed in either the file page or talk page when I asked the question, when it was posted he added the information and I found more evidence to support the claim. The problem here is that initially no evidence was presented so I simply asked for it. Nobody said that the replaced (more historically accurate) flag was "trolling", it is just that Musée Annam has added a lot of fantasies to Wikimedia Commons and they generally tend to be really bad at researching so evidence is always needed (a good example would be the "dynastic flags" they added). I don't see why anyone would doubt the current version (where the Ly doesn't touch the border) is false, a broken clock is right twicw a day. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 18:57, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

Flag of Malta.svg Current flag which I made.
Hi, user: Groan tek-en kindly accepted our request and made the new Cross(above). And I used it and edited the flag in the way specified in here. But the only thing that I don't know is that the ratios of the cross in the final flag are accurate to the official specifications. If not, can you make them correct and clean things up(I don't know how to measure and I'm not an expert in illustration.)? And also the file that I made is big compare to previous versions. By the way, I used the Pantone colors instead of given RGB because other flags have done it too(i.e. Flag of Bulgaria). Best regards. Kamran.nef (talk) 15:39, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

- After the 1st November Revolution, South Vietnam's new government carried out cancelling (thanh tẩy) all of habits of Ngô-family's era (it was like the cancelling of 200X-Vikiusers to their predecessors for the envy), even 1963-4 South Vietnamese newspapers similed "Ngô era" as the NAZI. Example : The national emblem from 1963 to 1967 . First, your knowledges about East-Asian culture what was too bad to do it, because Asian dragons (what in the politic and philosophy) was never green ("green dragon" is poor, ugly... / Vietnamese language as "hung" 兇). Then, at the case of South Vietnam about 1960-70, "green" as the bamboo which symbolized First Republic and President Ngô-đình-Diệm (節直心虛 tiết trực tâm hư) , and "[deepsky]blue" as the Asian dragon (青天白日 thanh thiên bạch nhật / 龍 [icon] symbolized 隆 [idea]) what means "flying to the sky" 乹 (thiên thăng) or "flourishing" 隆 (thịnh vượng) . So Sodacan's design is better ! (RR (talk) 22:15, 9 September 2021 (UTC))

Hi, I realized that the Vietnam People's Navy (VPN) has been using an emblem that is never available on Wikimedia Commons. It is basically a golden anchor with the rice things and the red Vietnamese roundel and I found it somehow necessary to make the vectorized version of this thing available on the Commons.
In recent events, VPN has been using it as its symbol, and it has also become the "roundel" on some of the VPN's aircraft (Naval Air Force)
Here are some documents:

Request for the Ensign and the Flag of the Vietnam Self-Defence Militia[edit]
I just find that the flag of the Vietnam Self-Defence Militia was just revealed recently. It can be the flag for the entire force, as well as the ensign for the Vietnam Maritime Self-Defense Militia force.
Seems like the flag shares the gold-red color schemes of the Flag of Vietnam, the square similar to the File:Insignia of the Vietnam Self-Defence Militia.svg with the surrounding rice symbol, the shining star image and the "DQTV" label.

Hello @Great Brightstar:
You have done a great job in creating and improving File:Naval Ensign of India.svg and File:Admiral ensign of Indian Navy.svg. But flags for other ranks except the admiral have not been created. I request you to please do so. I was able to find the image for the flag of Vice Admiral. I believe the other rank flags would follow the design used between 2001 to 2004 (en:Indian Armed Forces rank flags) but with updated emblem and design to match the current en:Indian Naval Ensign.

- Oh yeah, it would be helpful to see them from photographs or other official sources to let me know what are the exactly looks for them. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 02:29, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

Greetings, @Great Brightstar:
I have noticed your previous work in the field of vexillology ie., the designing of flags in particular. I have also observed your work in creating the vector images for the recently-unveiled ensign of the Indian Navy and the rank flag corresponding to the position of Admiral, a four-star rank. Not long ago, I found a picture display the rank flag of Vice Admiral, a three-star rank, which you may see the link to which been attached below. I hope you could use the picture to create a vector image for use in the Indian Naval Ensign article page. It would be very appreciative.

- Done You'll see it at w:Indian Naval Ensign. --Great Brightstar (talk) 16:58, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
Good afternoon, @Great Brightstar:
I've recently discovered a picture portraying the rank flag pertaining to the rank Rear Admiral, a two-star flag rank. You may find the picture attached below.
- Two-Star Link: https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=1879710
- Two-Star Photo: https://static.pib.gov.in/WriteReadData/userfiles/image/1DWS8.jpeg
However, there may be something you'd like to note. In the picture given above, which shows the rank flag attached to the officer's staff vehicle, the two stars are shown to be to right of the naval crest, near the fly. This is in contrast to the flags of Admiral and Vice Admiral, of whose corresponding flags bear the appropriate stars to the left of the naval crest, near the hoist.
I did further research on the subject, and was able to find a contradiction. I've attached two photos for comparison. For example, the rank flag of Vice Admiral has three stars located on the hoist (left-side), as seen in the below-mentioned first link. However, the vehicle flag of Vice Admiral bears the three stars near the fly (right-side), as seen in the second link.
- Vice Admiral Rank Flag: https://indiannavy.nic.in/sites/default/files/press_release_slide_image/Vice_Adm_Rajesh_Pendharkar_FOCinC_ENC__2_.jpeg
- Vice Admiral vehicle Rank Flag: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sMxTgBHGT8&t=58s
I think it can be generally assumed that the rank flag of any Indian naval officer will have the star to the hoist, while the corresponding vehicle rank flag will have the stars to the fly.
It would be best if you created a vector image for that of Rear Admiral, with the two stars near the hoist. Your thoughts? Yours faithfully, Silver Pavilion (talk) 13:52, 06 September 2023 (IST)
- OK I see, maybe there are some distinct car flags for Indian Navy commamders. It would be nice to see the official documentations. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 17:14, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- Maybe you can try to contact Flag of the World for help, it has a Facebook page here. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 17:22, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
Hello again, @Great Brightstar:
Thanks for reviewing my comment related to the difference between the ceremonial rank flags and vehicle rank flags of the Vice Admiral and Rear Admiral. I very much appreciated the work you did. To that end, I was finally able to discover the vehicle rank flag pertaining to the rank of Commodore, a one-star rank. I believe you can follow the "observation" mentioned above - by attaching the star to the hoist-side of the flag, as of the previous three. You can find the picture below:

- Vehicle-Flag Photo: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Frt5O4-aIAE9UkC?format=jpg&name=medium
I hope you work on this too, if you are free.

- OK, I made it. --Great Brightstar (talk) 17:53, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Military flag for Vietnam's newly-formed Army Corps 12[edit]
Hello there, can you help using the template of File:Flag of the People's Army of Vietnam.svg to help create the newly-founded flag of VPA/PAVN's Army Corps 12. It's basically the PAVN's "Quyết thắng" flag but with the label "QUÂN ĐOÀN 12" below the star just like any other PAVN-derived military flags that you have made. Here's the source to the actual picture [14]. Best regards --- Hwi.padam (talk) 00:32, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
